An idea that started with a love of wine and a desire to save money has blossomed into Benfield Wines. The winery on Shaffer Road in Swanton will hold a grand opening on Saturday.

Julia Benfield enjoyed wine, while her husband, Rob, wanted to make the hobby less expensive.

“So about 10 years ago he started making wine for me, and then he started making wine for me and my friends,” said Julia. “And then our friends said, ‘You should sell this, this is really good.’”

Rob didn’t believe them. It took compliments from strangers at a wedding to convince him.

“When you have a whole wedding reception saying, ‘This is good how do I buy this?’ that really changes your mind,” Julia said.

In addition to the location on Shaffer Road, the wines can be ordered online at www.benfieldwines.com.

The Swanton location was selected for a variety of reasons including the proximity to the Benfields’ day jobs and the growing western Lucas County population. The Benfields came to Swanton from Pettisville, which is evident from one of their wines, P’ville Peach.

The grand opening will be Saturday from 12-9 p.m at 11828 Shaffer Road, which is just west of State Route 295. Wine tastings will be $5 for all four wines. It will be $5 for a glass of wine.
