The ribbon was cut for the new Ohio Department of Transportation Fulton County garage on Wednesday during an open house event.

The new garage was built to replace the more than 60-year-old garage at the corner of Shoop Avenue and Linfoot Street in Wauseon. Wauseon City Council approved the purchase of that facility from ODOT at an Oct. 2 meeting.

“Since that building was built, trucks have gotten bigger, plows have gotten bigger, equipment has gotten bigger while the building stayed the same size and really seemed to get smaller and smaller,” said Patrick McColley, ODOT District 2 deputy director.

“This facility is an investment in our transportation system,” he added. McColley also praised the partnership of entities coming together to make the entire complex on State Route 108, south of County Road J, a reality.

“Working together, Fulton County and ODOT achieved efficiencies that financially benefited both entities, not only in the construction of this facility but into the future as well,” said Jeff Rupp, Fulton County Commissioner.

Area residents got a chance to tour the ODOT garage as well as the Museum and Welcome Center. In the spring, an open house will be held to celebrate the opening of the museum, Rupp said.

The open house on Wednesday included a meet-and-greet held with new directors Kelvin Freeman, Emergency Management Agency; Robert DeLeon, Emergency Medical Services; and Julia Brink, Visitors Bureau.
