The unemployment rate in Fulton County was down in August, according to data released Tuesday by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.
In August, the rate dropped to 4.7 percent from 5.1 percent in July. Last August, the unemployment rate in Fulton County was 4.2 percent.
In Lucas County, the jobless rate dropped slightly but remained above the statewide rate. The unemployment rate for the county in August was 6.6 percent, down fro 6.7 percent in July. In August 2016, the rate was just 5.1 percent.
Among the state’s 88 counties, preliminary August 2017 unemployment rates ranged from a low of 3.2 percent in Mercer County to a high of 8.5 percent in Meigs County. From July, unemployment rates increased in five counties, decreased in 75, and remained the same in eight counties.
The comparable unemployment rate, which is not seasonally adjusted, for Ohio was 5.3 percent in August.
Eleven counties had unemployment rates at or below 4.0 percent in August. The counties with the lowest rates, other than Mercer were: Holmes and Putnam, 3.6 percent; Wyandot, 3.7 percent; Delaware, 3.8 percent; Auglaize, Hancock, and Union, 3.9 percent; and Madison, Van Wert, and Wayne, 4.0 percent.
Eight counties had unemployment rates at or above 7.0 percent in August. The counties with the highest rates, other than Meigs were: Monroe, 7.9 percent; Lorain, 7.3 percent; Scioto, 7.1 percent; Adams, Coshocton, Cuyahoga, and Jefferson, 7.0 percent.
Ohio’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 5.4 percent in August 2017, up from 5.2 percent in July 2017. Ohio’s nonagricultural wage and salary employment increased 5,200 over the month, from a revised 5,540,000 in July to 5,545,200 in August 2017.
The number of workers unemployed in Ohio in August was 311,000, up 11,000 from 300,000 in July. The number of unemployed has increased by 29,000 in the past 12 months from 282,000. The August unemployment rate for Ohio increased from 4.9 percent in August 2016.
The U.S. unemployment rate for August was 4.4 percent, up from 4.3 percent in July and down from 4.9 percent in August 2016.
