Longtime Swanton leader passes away


John B. Syx, former superintendent and village administrator, passed away last Wednesday at the age of 84. Syx was active in the Swanton community for many years.

Syx served as superintendent of Swanton Local Schools from 1967-1986. After that, he was the village administrator for Swanton until retiring in 2003.

Prior to arriving in Swanton he had served as superintendent of Gorham Fayette Schools and as principal in the Otsego Local School District.

Syx was also a longtime member of the Swanton Rotary Club, serving as president and assistant district governor. He was also a 40-year member of the Swanton Chamber of Commerce, serving as president for a time.
