Proposed changes with the Spencer Township Fire Department will not have an impact on Swanton Township, according to Swanton Township Trustee Jeff Michael.
Spencer Township trustees voted 2-0 on Wednesday to transfer service to the Springfield Township Fire Department. Trustee Michael Hood was absent. If finalized, Springfield Township employees would be housed at the current Spencer Fire Department location.
Current Spencer Township employees could apply for positions in Springfield Township.
The contract would take effect July 1, 2016, if approved by Springfield.
“This is a sad day in the history of the Spencer Township Fire and Rescue Department,; and the Spencer Township Board of Trustees owe an immeasurable debt of gratitude to the men and women of Spencer Township Fire and Rescue Department for their willingness to make the ultimate sacrifice if called upon,” said Carl Arnold, Spencer Township fire chief, in a released statement.
Also in the release, Arnold said he “has never been given budget constraints to work with nor has he or any other member of the department been given an opportunity to counter the offer from Springfield Township.” He added that there was no public hearing for Spencer Township residents.
Spencer Township has contracts with Swanton and Harding townships to provide emergency services, which are expected to be honored.
“It will still be called the Spencer Township Fire Department, fire and rescue services will still operate out of the Spencer Township Fire Department building, it will still be staffed around the clock, with the only change being that it will be manned by Springfield Township Fire Department employees,” said Michael.
He added that, “We also have some ongoing discussions regarding options we are pursuing to further enhance our fire and rescue services in Swanton Township.”
