Evergreen Library gets hefty donation

Staff report

Evergreen Community Library has received a $2,500 donation from America’s Farmers Grow Communities, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and directed by local farmer Rhonda Gross of Lucas County.

The donation will help the organization develop its community room that is used for library programming for all generations, business training sessions for companies like The Andersons, the Metamora State Bank, and community rentals for organizations and family events.

“l am a regular library user, and see our library as a vital community resource,” said Gross, of rural Swanton. “I wanted to support the library with its mission of serving the 7, 530 people with quality library services for all. The library has a fantastic book collection and reading literacy skills are necessary to succeed in life. They also offer cultural, educational, and historical programs, and serve the community as an information center, which is so important to the residents of a rural community.”

Jane Dominique, library director, said, “We are so thankful to Rhonda Gross for naming the Evergreen Community Library as the recipient for the Monsanto America’s Farmers Grow Communities award. Our community library is a valued resource for the educational and recreational needs of our residents. We are proud to serve our community with multiple services that enhance their lives. The donation is appreciated and will help us continue to be a strong community partner.”

For six years, America’s Farmers Grow Communities has collaborated with farmers to donate over $22 million to more than 8,000 community organizations across rural America. Winning farmers will direct donations to nonprofits to help fight rural hunger, purchase life saving fire and EMS equipment, support ag youth leadership programs, buy much needed classroom resources, and more.

America’s Farmers Grow Communities partners with farmers to support local nonprofit causes that positively impact farming communities across rural America. Grow Communities is one program in the America’s Farmers community outreach effort, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund. Other programs include America’s Farmers Grow Ag Leaders, which encourages rural youth to remain in agriculture and provides $1,500 college scholarships to high school and college students pursuing ag-related degrees and America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, which works with farmers to nominate rural school districts to compete for $10,000 and $25,000 math and science grants.
