New Swanton Board of Education member David Smith is sworn in by district treasurer Joyce Kinsman.

The Swanton Board of Education began talking again last week about the possibility of a bond issue to fund a new elementary school building.

“(We) basically reviewed the plan that was abandoned in June and the board had some dialogue about that and determined that a working session/meeting would help,” said Swanton superintendent Jeff Schlade.

The working session of the board is planned for Wednesday, Jan. 27 at 6 p.m. It will either be at the board meeting room or at Swanton Middle School.

Possible building plans include a new pre-kindergarten through sixth grade building to be located behind the high school in the current parking lot. The location would require new parking in front of the high school, between the high school and soccer field and between the new elementary school and football stadium.

Also possible is the conversion of Park Elementary School to Board of Education offices and community and recreation offices.

At this time, no plans have been approved by the board and no decision has been made whether to ask voters to approve a bond issue.

Also at the meeting on Wednesday, two students received board commendations. Dena Sego and Serena King were commended for being the December Character Winners at the middle school.

Both girls were active in the drive to help the local food pantry. Each student brought in well over 100 items each. The middle school total was about 1,500 so they accounted for a large chunk on their own.

At the board meeting, donations were accepted including $85.59 from Girls on the Run to BackPack Buddies, $75 from Swanton Rotary to Park Elementary Principal’s account, $60 from Rob Gilson to BackPack Buddies, $50 from Betse Schmitz to BackPack Buddies, and $35 from Alpha Lambda to BackPack Buddies.

Also on Wednesday, board members were sworn in for their new terms, including newly elected member David Smith. Smith and incumbent Shannon Crow were the only two candidates to run for two seats in November. Smith replaces Mike McClure, who did not seek re-election.

Board leadership was also voted on. Steve Brehmer was re-elected as board president and Crow was re-elected as vice president.
